Graduate School Update

Greetings Scholars,

It’s official. I made it through my first semester of graduate school. Not only did I make it through, but I also got As on all my assignments and thus an A overall (happy dance).

With one semester down, I am excited to start my new class this semester, which is actually on the impact of AI on the field of writing. I am looking forward to the debate on this subject.

Additionally, I am not a fan of just tossing my notes once final grades are posted, so I wanted to share some of the fruits of my labor. First are reviews of some of the books we read in class:

Bird by Bird by Anne Lamott

On Writing by Stephen King

Second is an edited version of my final paper that was posted to Substack last week: What Makes a Writer. This is a theorization on the relation between reading and writing, as well as a reflection on my development as a reader and writer.

The class and graduate experience as a whole was an eye-opening experience. I ended up burning down and starting over for many of my writing processes. What’s left is stronger and better than before. I promise to take notes in my class this semester and report back. Wish me luck, and for those who are also returning to school this month, you got this.

Sincerely,

Kelly Vislocky

Reader, Writer, Scholar
